Maharaja Suraj Mal built many palaces and forts across his kingdom, one of them being the Lohagarh Fort, one of the strongest ever built in Indian history. The fort is surrounded by a gulf which was used to be filled with water to keep enemies out. The inaccessible Lohagarh fort withstand repeated attacks of British forces led by Lord Lake in 1805 when British forces laid siege for over six weeks.
There is two gates in the fort, the one in the north is known as Ashtdhaatu (eight metalled) gate while the other one facing the south is called Chowburja (four-pillared) gate.
