Ranthambore Fort lies within the Ranthambore National Park, near the town of Sawai Madhopur, the park being the former hunting grounds of the Maharajahs of Jaipur until the time of India's Independence. It is a formidable fort having been a focal point of the historical developments of Rajasthan.
Ranthambore National Park is a vast wildlife reserve near the town of Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan, northern India. It is a former royal hunting ground and home to tigers, leopards and marsh crocodiles. Its landmarks include the imposing 10th-century Ranthambore Fort, on a hilltop, and the Ganesh Mandir temple. Also in the park, Padam Talao Lake is known for its abundance of water lilies.
The national parks and sancturies at Ranthambore, Sariska, Bharatpur and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan were once the hunting grounds of the royalty. But now a ban on hunting and an awareness towards preserving reserves of nature, has helped to protect some of the rare and endangered species. The wide spectrum of bird and animal life in the state includes sambhar, chinkara, antelope, jackal, nilgai, hyena, wolf, tiger, leopard, siberian crane, the great Indian bustard, peacock, parakeet, flamingo, deer and kingfisher.
